Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization
The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is a museum in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The museum, opened in 2008, covers Islamic culture, with more than 5,000 artifacts from the Islamic world.
History of Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization
The Islamic Museum was originally inaugurated in the Heritage Area on November 6, 1996. Later, under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, it underwent a transformation into the traditional Souq Al Majarrah, which had been established as a souq in 1987. After reinterpreting and re-displaying the collections from the previous museum, it was reopened as the “Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization” on June 6, 2008.
Situated along the Al-Majarrah Waterfront in the Heart of Sharjah, this museum holds significant cultural and touristic importance. It stands out for being the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates. The museum’s exhibits encompass thousands of unique artifacts, showcasing the rich Islamic Civilization from the first century AH (7 AD) to the fourteenth century AH (20 AD). Visitors have the opportunity to delve into the discoveries and inventions of Muslim scholars throughout ancient Islamic history.
