Hawally is an area in the Hawalli Governorate, located in the State of Kuwait.
History of Hawally
Hawally serves as a bustling commercial hub, particularly renowned for its extensive array of computer-related goods in Kuwait. Before the first Gulf War, it was predominantly inhabited by Palestinians, although many departed during and after the conflict. Presently, Hawally is a melting pot of diverse Arab communities, including Egyptians, Syrians, Iraqis, and Lebanese. Additionally, it hosts a significant population of Asians, such as Filipinos, Indians, Nepalis, Bengalis, and Pakistanis.
The settlement traces its origins back to the 7th century, evolving around freshwater wells that were dug during the era of Al-Ala al-Hadhrami in what is now Kuwait. Formally recognized as a city in 1906 during Al Sabah’s rule, its name, “Hawally,” stems from the Arabic phrase “الحلو لي,” meaning “the fresh [water] for me.”
