Sitra
Sitra (Aalso known as Sitrah or Sitra Island is an island in Bahrain. It lies 5 km (3.1 mi) south of the capital, Manama, on Bahrain Island.
The Riffa fort is located near the Hunanaiya valley, 20 km from Manama. Entrance to the fort is free.
History of Sitra
Sitrah is a bustling town situated on Sitrah island, nestled in the serene waters of the Persian Gulf within the state and emirate of Bahrain. As a vital oil port, Sitrah plays a pivotal role in Bahrain’s economy, serving as both a hub for the nation’s petroleum production and an essential export center for oil fields located in northeastern Saudi Arabia.
A sophisticated network of submarine and land pipelines stretches approximately 36 miles (58 km) northwest across the Gulf of Bahrain and Bahrain island, connecting Sitrah to Al-Dammān on the Saudi mainland. This intricate infrastructure facilitates the seamless transportation of oil, with extensive tank farms dotting the landscape of the town.
Established in the 1960s, Sitrah boasts a modern urban layout characterized by a rectangular street pattern and contemporary buildings. To accommodate the shallow offshore waters, a marine causeway spans nearly 2.75 miles (4.5 km) into the gulf, culminating in a wharf where oceangoing tankers dock to load and unload cargo.
