Welcome to Juffair, a vibrant district nestled within the bustling cityscape of Manama, Bahrain. Once a quaint village inhabited by Shia Muslims, Juffair has evolved over the decades to become a dynamic urban hub, shaped by suburban expansion and land reclamation projects.
Originally described in John Gordon Lorimer’s Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf in 1908, Juffair was depicted as a charming village dotted with reed huts and surrounded by lush date palms and lucerne fields. At that time, it served as a home to Baharna cultivators and fishermen, with a modest fleet of pearling vessels dotting its shores.
The landscape of Juffair underwent significant transformation with the establishment of HMS Jufair, a British naval installation, in 1935. This strategic presence laid the foundation for further development, culminating in the leasing of office space to the United States Navy in 1950. Following Bahrain’s independence in 1971, the British departed, paving the way for the United States to assume control of the site, which was renamed Administrative Support Unit Bahrain and later Naval Support Activity Bahrain.
Today, Juffair stands as a bustling cosmopolitan enclave, characterized by a blend of modernity and tradition.
