History of Al Jasra
Welcome to Al Jasra, a picturesque coastal village nestled along the western shores of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Situated within the Northern Governorate and in close proximity to the iconic King Fahd Causeway, Al Jasra beckons visitors with its rich history and cultural heritage.
Renowned for its handcrafting tradition, Al Jasra has long been celebrated as a bastion of artisanal excellence. Like many villages in Bahrain, Al Jasra boasts its own vibrant souqs, where locals showcase their mastery of traditional crafts. In 1990, a local handicraft center was established to preserve and promote the unique arts and crafts that have flourished within the village for generations. From intricate woodworks to exquisite basket weaving, from pottery making to the delicate art of textile weaving, Al Jasra’s craftsmanship reflects a deep-rooted connection to its cultural roots.
At the heart of Al Jasra lies Bait Al-Jasra, a historic house dating back to 1907. Originally built by Shaikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa, this traditional-style residence later served as a summer retreat for Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Notably, Bait Al-Jasra holds a special place in Bahrain’s history as the birthplace of Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the revered Emir of Bahrain until 1999. Restored to its former glory in 1986, the house stands as a testament to the architectural heritage of the region, constructed with coral stones and palm tree trunks that echo the village’s natural surroundings.
